Traditional craft objects are charming, can add personality to a home in the form of a stained-glass sun catcher, or whimsy to a memory book with cut-paper profile silhouette, or even, in my experience, make that morning cup of coffee more enjoyable, because it is being sipped from a handmade mug. The artisans who create these functional objects do so with great skill, purpose and integrity, enriching our lives with their offerings.

For the exhibition Transparent, Translucent, Opaque the Geneva Center for the Arts is taking a slightly different view of the well crafted object. The artists in this show were chosen because of their roots in a making tradition that have grown into unique, personal expressions. The love for their craft is obvious as is each artist’s capacity for risk taking and experimentation. We admire the vulnerability that Victoria Belz exhibits in her sculptural hung glass pieces, created while maintaining a robust glass workshop and store right here in downtown Geneva. Alison Balcanoff stuns us with intricate cut paper artwork that is layered and stacked to make free-flowing and gorgeous reference to the natural world. Jill Birschbach’s ceramic sculpture are wonky and solid, yet have a playfulness and life to them that invites the viewer to get closer. Transparent glass, translucent paper, opaque ceramic in dialogue and homage to Illinois’s history of fine craft.

Join the GCA in welcoming artist Joanne Aono as she discusses her exhibit, PRAIRIE PASSAGE, and her process and approach to her work. Light fare will be available. This event is FREE to the public.

Prairie Passage is a solo exhibition consisting of drawings and an installation referencing the wild and cultivated plants that have grown on the prairie, providing food for the area’s inhabitants throughout history.

The installation will create a passageway alluding to time, food sources, and nature along the Fox River and the former Potawatomi trail.

Our Art History & Wine Tour Series has been rescheduled and returns to the center. Learn from art historian, Amy Bernard, while exploring the famous works depicting Bacchus/Dionysus while learning about and sampling some of Italy's offerings from the vine with sommelier, Tim Campbell.

Join us on November 16, 2022, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM as we celebrate our wonderful volunteers who are an integral part of the GCA and welcome some new ones.

Interested individuals: learn how you, too, can get involved and in what areas you can help to make the GCA continue to grow & thrive. There will be a short presentation about what has been accomplished during our inaugural year, followed by a discussion about volunteer opportunities. If you haven't been an active volunteer yet, this will be a great evening to get to know us better.

Learn the basics of Indigo dyeing with visiting artist Cathy Wilkerson. Explore a variety of techniques and create a set of 4 hand-dyed cotton napkins to take home with you. Traditional shibori, resist, and pole-dyeing techniques will be included with hands-on help. The fee includes all materials needed. Come have fun, get messy, explore, and see what you can do! NO PREVIOUS SKILLS NECESSARY.

Join us for the opening reception of a fiber art show that explores how we connect with the natural world around us and to one another. Featuring the visiting works from eight East Coast-based artists, all connected through their work as textile designers as well as their love and passion for the fiber arts.

While the artwork included in this exhibition varies in technique and scale, they all display the artists’ awareness and attention to colors, patterns, textures and form found in the natural world.

Lite fare will be served and a cash bar will be open throughout the evening. The event is free to the public, however donations are always welcome & encouraged.
